Soon after arriving at Wushe in landlocked Nantou County, after a 3 hour bus trip, we went to nearby Lushan (not Lishan). The main reason was to experience the hot springs, which as usual, for less than $8 Australian we enjoyed with no time limit at the Honeymoon Hotel. From the springs you could view the raging river below.

Again near Wushe. Chingjing Veteran's Farm and close by, being only a leisurely walking distance away were the beautiful gardens of Little Switzerland. The beginning of the day was beautiful but later it did become dark and started to rain just before we left Little Switzerland. The Farm, as seems so typical of the Veteran's Farms, afforded some beautiful views of the mountains. In winter, it snows there, but we were there in late Spring, so the temperature was just perfect, around 22 degrees celsius, while in Kaohsiung at sea level was a humid 32 degrees celsius. The farm has a Kiwi living there with his Taiwanese wife, who does sheep shearing shows on Saturday.

The old British Consulate in Kaohsiung and it's immediate surrounds. There are some nice views of the Kaohsiung Harbour, the port being one of the largest in the world, even though Kaohsiung only has a population of 2 million. Also, there are photos of my wife's brother Pen Yuan and his wife Tina taken at the consulate, as well as a small Buddhist temple very close to it.

Dream World is one of the largest shopping malls in Asia, only completed in 2007. We met up with one of the foreign teachers, Darell from Queensland who I met back in 2003. At the top is an amusement park with the obligatory ferris wheel from which Darrell and I took photos from. We took the MRT train there, which is an ultra modern train system only very recently completed as well, which is kept immaculately clean. Photos near the end are of the MRT station near the mall which has a very convenient shuttle bus service between it and the mall

The old Ciato Sugar Refinery in Kaohsiung. It was built by the Japanese during the 1895 to 1945 occupation. It is no longer in use and is easily reached by Kaohsiung's new ultra modern MRT train network

Curtis and Sophie again take us on another drive, this time to the Ali Shan National Park. We traveled only part of the way up the Ali Shan Mountain Railway to Fenci Hu, which is at an elevation of about 1450 metres, with the top being at 2200 metres. The mountain railway is one of the world's great mountain railways and it uses an extremely narrow gauge. It was designed by the Japanese and built by Taiwanese labour in 1912 during the Japanese occupation. The bamboo trees you see were imported from Mainland China about 300 years ago during the first settlement of Taiwan by Mainland Chinese. Also, on the way up, tea plantations can be seen which grow the famous very high quality Ali Shan Tea.

Tainan University is one of the most prestigious universities in Taiwan. Tainan City is only a 40 minute train ride north of Kaohsiung City. Sonia's cousin Daniel is an Aeronautical Researcher there and I was naturally interested in visiting his department. Later we were shown around Tainan.
